History
The third “E” type submarine was laid in May 1904 at the shipyard Deutsche Werft AG in Kiel , Germany , under factory number 111, by order of the Maritime Department of Russia. July 25, 1906 was credited to the lists of ships of the Black Sea Fleet as a submarine "Kambala." In June 1907 the ship was launched. She entered service on September 8, 1907 . On April 22, 1908, it was delivered by rail from Libava to Sevastopol .
The boat became part of the Separate Division of the submarines of the Black Sea Fleet, consisting of five submarines: two American-built " Sudak " and " Salmon " and three German-made " Karp ", " Karas " and "Kambala".
On May 29, 1909, during the exercises of the Black Sea Fleet, the boat commanded by Lieutenant Mikhail Mikhailovich Akvilonov (the submarine commander - Count PF Keller was on vacation) carried out at the Inkerman lighthouses in the Streletsky bay training attack of the Black Sea squadron returning from Yevpatoria. As a result of a collision with the battleship Rostislav, the submarine was cut into two parts and sank at a depth of 56 meters [1] . A number of sources mistakenly place the place of death of Kambala at the entrance to the South Bay of Sevastopol, that is, on the inner roads of Sevastopol (for example, [2] ), but the place of the death of the submarine Kambala outside the Sevastopol Bay was determined and circled.
The captain of the 2nd rank N. M. Belkin, the midshipman D. A. Tuchkov, the mine conductor F. I. Salnikov and 17 crew members were killed in charge of the scuba diving squadron in the Black Sea. Only Lieutenant Aquilon escaped from the bridge at the time of the collision. In addition, during a rescue operation on May 30, 1909, E. Bochkalenko, the diving boat boatswain of Berezan transport, died of a caisson disease.
The worst disaster in the history of the Russian submarine fleet has been the subject of a thorough investigation in the Maritime Office of the Russian Empire. For this purpose, a commission of the Marine Technical Committee was established under the chairmanship of Captain 1st Rank M. Beklemishev. In the final document of the investigation into the case of the death of Kambala, signed by the chief naval prosecutor N. G. Matveyenko , he called the imprudence of Lieutenant Akvilonov the cause of the disaster, for which the latter was imprisoned in a fortress for six months.
In July — September 1909, the bow of the boat with the bodies of 14 submariners in it was lifted by divers of the Kronstadt diving school. On September 11, 12 lower ranks were buried in a mass grave in the city Quarantine cemetery of Sevastopol with all military honors. The bodies of the dead officers funeral services at the Admiralty Cathedral of St. Nicholas, then they were transported to the railway station and sent to their relatives. Captain 2nd Rank N. M. Belkina was buried in the village of Vvedenskoye, Yaroslavl Province , warrant officer D. A. Tuchkov (1886-1909) - at the Novodevichy Cemetery in Moscow. On the grave was erected a monument according to the project of Lieutenant G. Dudkin, representing the Kambala conning tower. The bodies of the six dead members of the submarine team - F. I. Salnikova, K. Solomennogo, D. Omelchenko, I. Laikova, T. Paramoshkina and I. Bogatyrev remained forever on the bottom of the Black Sea.
