“Black Orchid” ( The Black Dahlia ) is a film by the American director Brian De Palma based on the eponymous detective James Ellroy [5] . The film opened the Venice Film Festival in 2006 (premiered on August 30). The Russian distributor of the film, Central Partnership , refused to translate the name exactly, choosing the Black Orchid option.

Content
Story
The film takes place in Los Angeles in the post-war 1940s . Two police officers are investigating the brutal and mysterious murder of a young girl, Elizabeth Short . Soon, one of the detectives discovers that his girlfriend is embroiled in this gloomy affair.
“Black Dahlia” is the name given by the newspaper to the victim of the murder of Elizabeth Short. A young Hollywood starlet was found dead on January 15, 1947 in Los Angeles: her body was cut into two at the waist, all internal organs were removed, and her mouth was cut from ear to ear. This crime was never solved by the police (despite more than two dozen suspects available). Short's story gave rise to a lot of speculation and speculation, resulting in Ellroy's artistic fiction, as well as in several movie adaptations.
Scarlett Johansson plays in this film a girlfriend of one of the police, a former prostitute named Kay Lake. Two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank performs in an uncharacteristic role for femme fatale : the mysterious Madeline Linscott, whose very influential family is struggling to hide the truth about the mysterious murder of a girl nicknamed Black Dahlia.

Creation
The film was originally supposed to be directed by David Fincher [6] .
Casting
- For a long time, Mark Wahlberg was called the contender for the role of Sergeant Blanchard. When De Palma was involved in the project, Wahlberg was replaced by Aaron Eckhart (Wahlberg went to the project “ Italian Robbery ”) [6] .
- The role of the Black Dahlia - Elizabeth Short was originally proposed by Maggie Gyllenhaal . The actress refused to participate in the project, and the role went to Mia Kirchner .
- For the role of Madeline Linscott, the actress Eva Green was planned, but she refused to participate.
- Brian De Palma really wanted to shoot Rose McGowan in this film. The actress received an offer to play Cheryl Saddon long before the filming began.
Filming
All filming took place in the pavilions of Bulgaria and Los Angeles . For the pavilion shootings in Bulgaria, the artist Dante Ferretti , who also worked with Federico Fellini and Pier Paolo Pazolini ), specially created 25 decoration interiors, among which were part of the Los Angeles Chinatown , city streets and crime scene. Ferretti also recreated a 1947 police station, Red Arrow Motel and Laverne Nightclub.
2 months before the start of filming, 7 large containers with the necessary historical details were delivered to Bulgaria from the USA , and 50 American cars of that time were imported from Italy and the UK .
