Biography

Cecile Mary Barker was born in England , the city of Croydon , in the family of woodcarver Walter Barker and Mary Eleanor Oswald. As a child, Cecile suffered from epilepsy , from which she later completely recovered. The girl began to show creative inclinations early. Due to her daughter’s pain, her parents decided that she’d better get an education at home. Cecil's father paid for extramural art courses, and also identified his daughter in an evening class at the Croyden School of Art , in which Cecil herself began to teach.

When the girl was 15 years old, her father showed several works of his daughter to the publisher Rafael Tuck. The works were bought and printed in a series of postcards. Mr. Barker was very proud of his daughter and, until his death in 1912, helped the young artist in every possible way to sell illustrations and poems (written by her) to various publishing houses.

Cecile Mary Barker is famous for her Flower Fairy books. The first book of Barker ("Spring Flower Fairies" was published only in 1923, in the wake of the wildly blooming fashion for fairies . With the light hand of Queen Mary (a lover of doll houses), who sent exhausted World War I friends with postcards with cheerful and innocent fairies, Barker books (as many as 8 pieces) and postcards with her drawings became incredibly popular. It must be said that all the fairies were drawn by Barker from nature, from the pupils of the kindergarten, which her sister was in charge of. Yes, and the flowers and trees are reproduced with truly botanical accuracy newt.

Since 1920, Cecile Maria Barker has written many religious works, including illustrated biblical stories, together with her sister Dorothy.

The artist died at the age of 77, on February 16, 1973 .
