Location map of the Greenland-Iceland threshold
Greenland-Iceland Ridge ( Greenland-Iceland ridge ) - underwater elevation in the North Atlantic Ocean , which connects the underwater bases of the islands of Greenland and Iceland . It stretches along the bottom of the Danish Strait for 90 kilometers. The greatest depth of the threshold is 300 meters. The threshold prevents water exchange between the Atlantic Ocean and the Greenland Sea , as a result of blocking of water flows, the water temperature at depths exceeding 400 meters, to the north of the threshold is −1 ° C, to the south of it is about + 8 ° C. [one]
The threshold was mainly formed from 57 to 16 million years ago as a result of spreading [2] .
