Italy-Greece high-voltage direct-current line is a monopolar line connecting Italy and Greece , made with a submarine cable with a maximum transmission power of 500 MW. The line has been in operation since 2001. HVDC Italy-Greece starts at a converter station in the city of Galatina in Italy and is designed as a 43-kilometer underground cable. Further, the line crosses the Ionian Sea with a 163 km long submarine cable. The line reaches the coast a few kilometers south of the Albanian border, from where it continues by an aerial line 110 kilometers long to the converter station in the city of Arachthos . Converter stations contain 12-pulse thyristor bridges with water cooling, high harmonic filters on the AC and DC side (on the Arachthos side) voltages.
