The name is given by the name of Baron Pierre Bernard Milius , the governor of Reunion Island , who introduced this species to France in 1821. [2]

There is speculation that this species was introduced into the Middle East in ancient times and served as a crown of thorns to Jesus . [2]

Among some fans of indoor floriculture, this plant is sometimes found under the name "crown of thorns", possibly due to the abundance of thorns on its branches. Another name is brilliant spurge ( Euphorbia splendens ). [3]

Spread

Endemic of Madagascar .

Morphology

The bush is extensively branched, growing to 1.8 m tall. The stem is grayish, slightly ribbed. On the tops of the shoots elliptical pale green leaves are born, 3.5 cm long and 1.5 cm wide, each of them is provided with two stipules, transformed into sharp spines. Leaf blades fall off with age, and strong spines remain forever, therefore only the tops of the stems are covered with leaves .

Bracts have the brightest color of all euphorbia (scarlet, orange or yellow), rounded, up to 12 mm wide. Inflorescences consist of 2-4 groups of flowers , each of which is surrounded by floral leaves . Inflorescences brought out of the bizarre intricacies of spines on long green legs. [four]

Practical use

Impassable thickets of this plant are used in the tropics to create hedges and for decorative purposes. [five]

Used for growing as a houseplant. At home, growing seeds are rarely formed, so the euphorbia mile propagates by cuttings. [five]
