Distribution and lifestyle

Most species live in Central America and northern South America . Almost all species are migratory, however, except for periods of migration, vireons rarely fly long distances.

They live in undergrowths, tree crowns, mangrove swamps . Most species settle in pairs or large groups. Nests are built from leaves and bark.

Vireons have a dull plumage of green, sometimes with a brown or gray back. Outwardly reminiscent of a clapper-stick , but larger. Beak in many species has a bend at the tip. Most male vireons are songbirds , but the song is uncomplicated and monotonous.

They feed on insects, fruits, sometimes spiders and mollusks.
