Content
Story
A rich Volga merchant Ignat Gordeyev had a son - the heir to Thomas. Joy is overshadowed by the death of a wife who has not suffered childbirth. Thomas is given up for fostering in the family of godfather Jacob Mayakin.
After six years, the father takes his son home and tries to educate him in his own way - a tough and tenacious man, master of life. At school, Thomas became friends with Kolya Ezhov, a boy from a poor family, the first student in the class, and Afrika Smolin, the son of a leather factory owner.
From an early age, Thomas cannot find himself in the life in which his relatives and he live. After another spree dies father. The young man becomes the owner of a large fortune, but it does not bring him joy and tranquility. He dissatisfies his dissatisfaction. Seeing how much injustice is around, he goes to a cruel but senseless conflict with people in his circle.
Mayakin seeks recognition of his incapacity, and in a short time, the limp Gordeyev finds himself at the very bottom of his life. A descending tramp, he stands in line for a stew in a charity house built with his father's money.
