Russian Theological Theater "Glas"

Russian Ecclesiastical Theater “Glas” is a Moscow theater of Orthodox orientation.

Theater History

Russian Theological Theater "GLAS" was founded on April 24, 1989 by graduates of the Higher Theater School. M.S.Schepkina Nikita Astakhov and Tatyana Belevich .

In 1991, RDT GLAS received the status of a state theater; its founder is the Department of Culture of Moscow .

Nine years later, the theater finally found its home - a small mansion on 30 Malaya Ordynka . Considering the great merits of the theater, in 1998 the Moscow Government decided to build a new theater complex on this site.

The creators, directors and leading actors of the theater are a well-deserved activist. RF Nikita Astakhov and Hon. art. Russian Federation Tatyana Belevich - graduates of the oldest theater university named after M.S. Shchepkina. They were able to unite talented people around themselves and form a highly professional troupe. And not just to create a new theater, but to affirm their creative position - Orthodox artists of Russia. For the first time in decades, GLAS has managed to bridge the artificially created gap between the Church and theatrical art. Nikita Astakhov and Tatyana Belevich - authors of original plays.

The leaders of the GLAS Russian Spiritual Theater took an active part in the restoration of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior (together with Archpriest George Dokukin). The GLAS Theater still participates in the country's public life: holds various events (Optina Forum, International Christmas Readings section), organizes charity evenings to help orphans and disabled people.

Theater performances are distinguished by a variety of genres and vivid forms. The performances feature choral music performed by theater artists. Especially for the theater, artists of contemporary art create their works: composers - Honored Artist of the Russian Federation Sergey Zhukov , Honored Artist. RF Vladimir Dovgan , Valery Sariev , artists Tatyana Petrova-Latysheva , Olga Golovacheva , choreographer Ekaterina Pustovalova.

The many years of experience of Orthodox cultural figures in the post-Soviet period are summarized in the book “Invisible Steps of Christianity” published in 2008 (authors - N. Astakhov, T. Belevich). To a certain extent, this experience embodies the idea of the great Russian Orthodox writer N. V. Gogol, who proclaimed: “Modern man cannot merge directly with Christ; a person cannot meet directly with the bright light of Christ; we need some steps of Christianity, which is art and, in particular, theater. ”
