The island is located about 3.5 km north-east of Panarea Island, has an area of 0.3 km² and is the largest of the uninhabited islands and reefs of the Aeolian Archipelago. The shores of the island are carved by rocks facing the sea, while the center is a large plateau, which for centuries has been used as a place for growing crops, pastures and making seasonal dwellings. A few dozen meters from the island is the Spinazzola cliff, with an area of 0.0055 km² and 79 meters in height.
Baziluzzo has a volcanic origin and is formed by several layers of ancient lava flows, there are also layers of obsidian and pumice . The first people appeared on it, as it is considered based on archaeological finds, even in the Neolithic era. In Roman times, seasonal patrician villas were located here. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the island’s plateau area was used as pasture and a place for growing capers . In 1991, the island was declared a nature reserve with a ban on the cultivation of any crops here.
