Yakyo (alternative names - yako, yako, yakurr, ekuri, uhep ), people in Nigeria , inhabiting the left bank of the middle cross of the river Cross. The number is 50 thousand people. The people include subethnic groups reproach (uhep), idomi, nko, ekuri, nkpani . They speak Lokyo (Lukö, Lyko) languages ​​of the Benue-Congolese group of the Niger-Kordofan family (the dialects are Nkpani and Ughen ) [1] .

Religions

Most of the population is committed to traditional beliefs (cults of ancestors, animate forces of nature, fetishism, magic and witchcraft; ritual cannibalism existed in the past), there are also Christian Protestants and followers of African-Christian churches [2] .

Life

According to legend, representatives of this people came to the Cross River from the east. Mainly engaged in manual farming ( yams , cassava , corn , peanuts , bananas , legumes ), hunting, gathering the fruits of oil palm , breeding small cattle, pigs, chickens. Such crafts as blacksmithing, weaving, pottery, wood carving, weaving are developed. They live in large compact villages, a typical dwelling is a rectangular hut with walls on a wooden frame with a gable roof of palm leaves and branches, and sometimes a round hut with a conical roof. The traditional clothes of the people of Yakoy are loincloths. Food is mainly vegetable (soup, porridge with spicy seasonings) [1] .

Family

Traditional social organization is based on village and large families, matrilineal and patrilineal childbirth, age institutions, corporate hunting associations, men's secret societies of “lepardian people” (Nkpe), Okenka, Kort, Ikpunkar, Obama, women's secret society Ekuruso. Polygyny, purchased marriage, bilateral cross-linked marriage are often found. The most common genres of folklore are fairytales, songs, cosmogonic myths (Lvova, 1984: 107) [3] .
