The Cabinet of Thomas Jefferson is the administration of US President Thomas Jefferson , who runs the United States of America from March 4, 1801 to March 4, 1809 .
Jefferson's rise to power
In connection with the approaching year of the next presidential election, the struggle between rival political parties and their leaders has reached particular intensity. The personal relationship between Adams and Jefferson was so complex that by the end of his presidential four-year-old Adams completely stopped talking with his vice president [1] .
The 1800 US presidential election is called the 1800 revolution. In this election, Vice President Thomas Jefferson, ahead of President John Adams, became the third president of the United States. The election brought the Democratic Republican Party to power and ultimately caused the collapse of the federalist party .
For the first time, the inauguration of the US president was held in the city of Washington - so in the summer of 1800, by decision of the US Congress, they decided to name the federal capital after the death of the " father of the nation " in December 1799 . [2]
Cabinet Formation
The composition of the cabinet of the first administration of Jefferson testified to the seriousness of the president’s intentions to reconsider the main directions of the foreign and domestic policy of the American state and, most importantly, to ensure their implementation without interference from the federalists. Ministers who were members of the federalist offices of his predecessors had already been replaced by like-minded Jeffersons during the first few months of the Republican government, which guaranteed unity in the executive branch of government that was absent in previous years [3] .
On March 4, 1801, the inauguration of Thomas Jefferson and Aaron Burr took place.
- March 5, 1801 and. about. US Attorney General was appointed US Attorney General Levy Lincoln , who held this position until May 1, 1801 . And on May 2, 1801, James Madison was appointed US Secretary of State, who held this post until the end of Jefferson's presidential term, until March 3, 1809 .
- Until May 13, 1801, Samuel Dexter , who was appointed by Adams, retained the post of US Treasury Secretary, and on May 14, Albert Gallatin was appointed to the post of US Treasury Secretary, who retained this post throughout Jefferson’s presidency and managed to keep him in Madison’s presidency until February 8 1814 year .
- The general postmaster of the United States until November 28, 1801 was Joseph Habersham , who was replaced by Gideon Granger - he held the post of the entire presidency of Jefferson, and managing to keep him in the Madison administration , until March 17, 1814 .
- On March 5, 1801, Levy Lincoln was appointed US Attorney General , becoming also . about. US Secretary of State .
- On March 5, 1801, Henry Dearborn became U.S. Secretary of War, who retained his post throughout Jefferson's presidency until March 4, 1809 .
- On March 31, 1801, Benjamin Stoddert resigned from the post of US Navy Secretary. And only on July 27, 1801, Robert Smith was appointed US Secretary of State , who retained his post all Jefferson presidency until March 4, 1809 .
Cabinet changes
Jefferson’s cabinet was also relatively stable. After the duel of Hamilton and Burr , on which Hamilton was killed, a fat cross was put on Burr's political career. Therefore, in the second administration of Jefferson, Vice President, since March 4, 1805, was George Clinton . On March 2, 1805, Attorney General Levy Lincoln resigned two days before the second inauguration of Jefferson, but only on August 7, 1805 was his successor John Breckinridge appointed, who passed away on December 14, 1806 . His successor, a month later, on January 20, 1807 was Cesar August Rodney , who retained his post in the Madison administration.
