Rugged Cell Phones

Rugged Cell Phones [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] are cell phones with shockproof design and moisture protection of the case [12] .

Impact resistance can vary - from the nominal declared by the manufacturer [1] [4] , to withstand severe mechanical stress.

Similarly, moisture protection can range from protection from non-directional splashes to full water protection, withstanding even prolonged immersion without consequences. As a result of water protection, such phones usually withstand the impact of fine dust or sand without consequences.

More about the term

Protected cell phones, browsers primarily refer to models of devices that are structurally designed to withstand mechanical shocks, as well as more moisture-proof than conventional mass phones [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] . There are several important nuances:

Shockproof
  • The devices are designed to protect only from shock (often from vibration) [13] , and not from abrasion and other mechanical influences. Erased buttons, scratched case and display are quite common in this segment of models.
  • The security of the device is not absolute [11] . The presence of a sturdy case provokes many people to thoughtless “tests” of the device, such as throwing a phone into a wall, throwing it on concrete, etc., which, of course, they would not do with an ordinary “mobile phone”.
  • Any such phone has weaknesses, the most vulnerable of which is always the display. With a point impact on it, for example, in the case of a device falling “face” down on an uneven surface such as rubble, the glass can easily crack. Also, the display almost always fails under strong pressure, for example, when a car wheels over. At the same time, the case may not suffer in general, and the phone may continue to work.
Water resistant
  • In this aspect, it is necessary to immediately note the difference between moisture and water resistance. The first is only protection against splashes, albeit very strong, and the second is guaranteed tightness and performance after full and prolonged immersion in water. The vast majority of protected phones are not completely sealed, and when immersed, the liquid begins to seep inside and after a few seconds it can irreversibly disrupt the performance of internal electronics. Very few such "mobile phones" are designed for complete, one hundred percent resistance to the water element. However, despite this, for example, heavy rain is not scary for such a phone.
Dustproof
  • Protection against penetration into the dust structure directly adjoins the protection against liquid penetration. Models of this segment well tolerate both sand and extremely “clean” places such as a vacuum cleaner dust collector. It is much easier to keep the case tight from dust than from water, due to the larger particle size. However, after such incidents, one must not forget to purge critical places: keyboard, connectors, slots. This, however, also applies to the consequences of falling into water, after which it is often recommended to disassemble and dry the “filling” of the device in order to avoid subsequent degradation of the printed circuit board. [14]
Remarks

There is still such a moment. Some "ordinary" cell phones quite successfully withstand significant mechanical stress, but are not positioned by manufacturers as protected, although in fact they are close to them. On the other hand, when conducting detailed comprehensive crash tests, such models usually lose a lot in terms of the total performance of specially designed devices.

Often, to describe the security, a system of classification of the degrees of protection of the shell of electrical equipment from the penetration of solid objects and water is used - the Ingress Protection Rating .

And the last one. The term “protected” is sometimes used in descriptions of cryptophones - specialized devices that are closed to listening by encrypting a conversation [15] [16] [17] [18] . Since there are very few such specialized devices (not least because of their high price [15] [17] ), there is no problem distinguishing between these classes of phones, moreover, in this context, this term most often sounds like “protected from listening / wiretapping " [15] [16] [17] [18] .

History

1998

The first cell phone in a secure case, Siemens S10 Active , was released by Siemens in 1998 based on the model, S10 [1] [19] . The differences were in the design of the case, protecting it from falling by reinforcing and adding rubber inserts. Also, this phone was not afraid of splashing, although it was not leakproof and could not withstand immersion in water.

 There was a huge number of enthusiasts who began to stoke these devices in beer mugs with German humor. Phones did not die instantly, they rang in glasses, but then for some time they went out of order. However, this model was a breakthrough for the company, it was popular, and subsequently its success allowed the creation of a whole line of “protected” devices, the company became one of the leaders in this segment [1] . 

1999

A little later, in 1999, Ericsson released the second cell phone of this class, Ericsson R250 . Interestingly, the protective properties were not supposed to be the main advantage of the model - the phone was created with the support of the GSM Pro standard, some kind of attempt to develop the GSM system in the direction of the PMR radio sets [1] .

 The model became an appendage to the GSM Pro system and it was created in the style of walkie-talkies ... Right after the announcement of the model, interest in it was so high that the company launched the process of creating the next device. Here, under interest, we can talk about the hype raised in the media around the model, about the potentially large market for this product. Demand exceeded supply for a short time, which was already a miracle. Imagine that you are selling a device with characteristics that are twice worse than that of competitors, it looks unusual and not too expensive, and the price is about the same two times higher. Will they buy such a phone? The logical answer is no. The market decided differently - people bought Ericsson R250 in countries where there was no GSM Pro, which threw the company's marketers into a shock. Indeed, in their opinion, the main function of the device was Push to Talk [20] [21] . Buyers considered the protective features of the case as the main advantage of the device and did not pay attention to the appendage in the form of incomprehensible technology [1] . 

In the same 1999, Nokia entered the fray. Observing the success of Ericsson R250, engineers developed the Nokia 6250 model similar to it in many design solutions [1] . Marketers of the company called their device the first protected, which was a very controversial statement. However, an undoubted fact was that, unlike competitors, Nokia 6250 could truly withstand immersion in water for up to 10 minutes without consequences [1] . This model also included such an interesting functionality as determining the volume of ambient noise, which, however, was not very accurate [1] .

 
Benefon ESC!
 The Nokia 6250 has become the standard among secure phones. User reviews about the ups and downs that this phone fell into are simply amazing - falling from a height of 50 meters, dipping into a lime mortar, and then washing the phone from a hose, etc. [19] 

Benefon has become a pioneer in the use of GPS navigation in mobile phones with its waterproof and shockproof Benefon ESC! [19] . This phone for the long five years remained the only one in its class [1] [19] [22] . Interestingly, it was released a year before the official cancellation of the roughening of the GPS signal for civilian users, which occurred only in May 2000 [23] .

In the following 2000, Ericsson introduced the following model - Ericsson R310s . In it, the company's engineers decided to use an external antenna. Providing mechanical protection for this fragile part was decided originally, the antenna was placed in a rubber shock-absorbing casing, similar to a shark fin. Subsequently, such a design was not used, all manufacturers switched to internal antennas [1] .

 The author of these lines has an old Ericsson R310s phone, which has become a legend: he has a solid magnesium frame on which all parts are attached, strong plastic of the case, rubber inserts around the perimeter, reliable membranes and durable plugs. The mobile phone is completely sealed, and even the instructions say: “if necessary, the phone can be washed under a gentle stream of cold water from under the water tap.” Experience shows that Eric can be boiled in a pot and still make calls; As for the shockproof properties, I only note that a couple of times I hammered the pegs from the tent into the frozen November soil [4] . 

Siemens consolidates the success of the S10 Active by launching in 2000 the new Siemens M35 , with a “filling” identical to the C35i, but with a different case. Although the model does not overtake the initial version in sales, it nevertheless becomes successful enough for the company to decide to develop this direction further.

2001

The next release of paired models, Siemens ME45 and S45i, takes place in 2001. This time, the protected sales option left the basic model far behind, becoming the most famous and successful Siemens phone [5] .

 The idea hit what is called the very point. ME45 came out immediately after a period of attempts by major manufacturers to drastically reduce the cost of phones, which hit primarily the mechanical reliability of their cases. As a result, consumers ... got fragile phones that crashed from a simple fall on the asphalt from a height of human growth. Against their background, ME45 looked advantageous - like a phone that, with its rich capabilities and acceptable urban style, has good protection against harmful influences. This was seen as a protection of investment: the phone ... unlike its competitors, it will not fall apart at the first accidental fall and will not rust if it falls in the rain [6] . 

The device has become a true legend of the class of "extreme mobile phones", in Russia he was given the apt nickname "Messer" [1] [4] [6] [19] . Later, the company released several more models, but it was not able to repeat the commercial success of this seemingly simple and unpretentious device [5] [6] .

2002

In 2002, Nokia decided to return to the segment of sports devices, having developed the Nokia 5210 - a model that had the unusual ability to change the case panel. True, because of this, it became problematic to ensure its tightness, which resulted in low moisture resistance [1] . Engineers also built into this model a thermometer, which, however, had an error of 1-2 degrees [1] .

2003

A year later, in 2003, the Nokia 5100 model appeared, also with interchangeable housing panels, but with improved protective characteristics [24] [25] . In addition to the thermometer, it also had a built-in flashlight and a noise volume determiner, which first appeared in the Nokia 6250 [1] . Based on this determinant, engineers implemented a dynamic volume control system - with an increase in ambient noise, the conversation also becomes more audible [25] . The phone, unlike the 6250, was not waterproof, although, of course, it was much better protected from splashes than conventional devices. The complex case design was also expressed in the difficulty of pressing keys [25] .

2004

In 2004, Nokia launched the Nokia 5140 Cellular, which continues its line of sports phones. For the first time, an electronic compass was built in it - inaccurate and energy-intensive, but quite useful. There is also a flashlight (not working when the keyboard is locked) [22] . The case is technologically the same as that of the 5100, moisture protection and problems with pressing the keys are the same, although the keyboard backlight is improved, but the shock resistance is deteriorated due to the replacement of some steel parts with plastic ones [22] . The device was one of the first to acquire the possibility of PTT (Push to Talk) [20] [21] , however, this also requires operator support for this technology [22] . The manufacturer also offered a separate case, working as a GPS-receiver, however, it was expensive and energy-intensive - for navigation purposes it is better to use separate GPS-navigators with replaceable finger batteries [22] . Although the combination of a GPS receiver and a cell phone at that time was unique: the first such phone Benefon ESC! already left the scene, and new models with GPS came only two years later [1] [22] .

 
Siemens M65

Looking ahead a year, we can say that the Nokia 5140i modification was also released. In the hardware, nothing has changed, except for the improved screen, and in the software part - changing the menu, as well as adding support for mp3 and email client [26] .

In Siemens, in the previously released fifth series, the M50 and M55 were not protected, despite the index [6] . And in 2004, the Siemens M65 was released. During its development, insufficient testing of the software was carried out due to the desire to release it as soon as possible, which resulted in many errors in it and caused widespread criticism of this model. Despite the fact that the firmware was later finalized, the label of a “buggy” and “damp” phone [26] [27] [28] stuck to the device for a long time. However, the device itself has certainly become a successful representative of “extreme mobile phones” [7] .

Siemens ME75

Later, in 2005, on the basis of the M65, a modification was released, the Siemens M65 Rescue Edition model, positioned as a telephone for firefighters, with reinforcement of the body, appropriate coloring, as well as a loud speaker [29] [30] . The changes, however, were not dramatic, but rather image-based - for example, it was mentioned that the function Push To Talk [20] [21] , similar to walkie-talkies [31] , would be much more useful to rescuers and firefighters.

In 2005, Siemens released two devices at once, with a half-year difference: Siemens M75 in May and Siemens ME75 in November. Model M75 for its powerful, deliberately rough design received nicknames such as "armored car" [32] . In general, the phone came out very successful and resistant to various influences [8] [33] [34] . But the ME75, despite its strength [35] and functionality [36] , was criticized for the unsuccessful rubber seal - after some time it peeled off [4] [37] [38] [39] [40] [41] . However, there is mention of peeling off the seal on the M75, and not with time, but right away, but this is due not to bad rubber, but to the case design itself [35] .

2006

 
Nokia 5500 Sport

In the spring of 2006, Nokia released a completely new model for itself, the Nokia 5500 Sport [1] . Engineers abandoned the case of the previous type, returning to a more traditional layout. An interesting pedometer function has been added with the ability to record results and then view them on a computer. However, a problem was soon revealed with the keyboard peeling off, as a result of which the phone gained negative popularity [1] [4] [9] . In addition to this, the metal frame [4] [10] bent rather easily. This is all the more annoying because the device itself was a very good representative of the class, often more superior to Siemens M65 in terms of resistance to impact [10] .

After the purchase of Siemens by BenQ, the BenQ-Siemens M81 was released, which ended the history of this company. Despite the rubberized case, this phone was protected only in appearance, but in fact there was no shock or moisture protection [26] .

The actual death of Siemens, the leader in the production of secure devices, has greatly aggravated the situation. Nokia managers decided that it makes no sense to produce devices that are not very profitable, and for some time left this market segment [1] . Attempts have been made to produce secure phones and other manufacturers. In 2007, Sonim XP1 appeared, declared as extreme [42] . Opinions regarding its security varied - some observers claim that the device in fact often could not withstand even ordinary mechanical loads, [1] others say that the claimed properties are fully confirmed [43] .

2008

In 2008, Samsung also introduced the supposedly “extreme” M110 [1] [4] .

 In the absence of other solutions, even the very idea of ​​a “protected” apparatus is received with a bang. In Germany, where the traditions of such phones are strong, M100 sales are breaking all records. As a result, the company is preparing a number of new products with a similar design, some of which are already distinguished by better protection and good performance [1] . 

Sony Ericsson engineers decided to protect not a budget model, but a rather sophisticated phone. In 2008, Sony Ericsson C702 came out of their hands, distinguished by a rich "filling." However, the moisture protection of the phone left much to be desired, in particular, for some reason, the communication connector was not plugged [4] . Impact resistance in the absence of rubber inserts on the case was even lower [4] .

At Samsung, they decided to continue their successful endeavor with the M100, and Samsung B2700 was released “on the spot”. This phone already had better protection than its predecessor [44] [45] . The package bundle is unusual: a flashlight, a pedometer, an altimeter and a compass [44] . Despite the fact that the battery has been increased, it lasts for a relatively short time [44] .

 
Sonim XP3

Sonim launched the second “extreme mobile phone," Sonim XP3 , which took into account some aspects of criticism of the previous model [26] . The new phone had a noticeably better screen, as well as many functions, ranging from Bluetooth to a compass, pedometer and altimeter [26] .

2009

In 2009, Samsung B2100 came out. Despite the fact that the manufacturer is positioning it as a younger model, the device is protected much more seriously than the B2700. In particular, he can lie in water at a depth of a meter for half an hour without damage to himself [46] [47] . This is, of course, an outstanding result, this has not happened since the time of Nokia 6250, for ten years now. Impact resistance has also improved, in particular, the design of the side plugs, which no longer fall off, has changed, the top is slightly rounded [46] . Removed an additional camera, not really needed in the absence of video calls. However, there are problems with a too tight central key [46] . In general, the design of the phone is very successful [48] .

 We went much further and with special zeal moved this phone by car (so much so that the phone flew out from under the wheels), played the phone on football on the asphalt, jumped on it, threw it on the wall ... And with each new test of anger and admiration for there were more and more participants in the experiment. Anger, because several healthy men can not break one small Samsung GT-B2100 [48] . 

An unusual phone was released by Nokia - it looks like the Nokia 3720 classic and you can’t say that it is protected [3] [49] . Although the device clearly loses to the brothers in the class - to take at least weak waterproofing or the absence of rubber pads on the body [49] .

2010

 
Samsung GT-B2710 ( Xcover 271 )

In 2010, Samsung released [1] two protected models: Samsung E2370 and its more expensive brother Samsung B2710 (its second name: Xcover 271 ). When comparing the characteristics of these two models (see the comparison of the E2370 and B2710 models ), you can see that the first one has only a 2000 mAh battery as an advantage [2] , and the second has a greater degree of protection (according to the manufacturer, the E2370 model complies with the standard IP54 [3] , while the B2710 has IP67 [4] ). There is also a GPS module in the B2710, however, the battery is already not of such a large capacity (1300 mAh [5] ).

2011

The most durable phone in the world, according to the Guinness Book of Records, recognized Sonim XP 3300 Force [50] . During the test, the phone withstood a fall from a height of more than 25 meters (higher than a 12-story building) and remained “without significant damage”. The previous world record of such a plan (set in 2008) is 3.25 m and is owned by the JCB Toughphone also manufactured by Sonim [51] .

2014

In 2014, the German Computerbild magazine, according to the test results, recognized the RugGear RG900 model ( RG970 in Russia) as the best protected smartphone [52] .

In the same year, the first Android phone from Sonim comes out. The model became Sonim XP6

Comments

 None of the modern so-called secure devices can provide full-fledged operation in extreme conditions. We can recall only examples from the past. In particular, real "armor-piercing" Ericsson models, such as R250s Pro, R310s, Nokia 6250. The latter was really capable of being under water for a long time.
