Geography and geology
Mono Lake is located in eastern Central California, east of Yosemite National Park , between the Sierra Nevada Mountains and California . On the south shore of the lake is a small settlement of .
The lake lies at an altitude of 1945 meters above sea level. Its area is 150 km² , the volume is 2.97 km³ . The average depth is 17 meters . There are several islands on the lake. The largest, Pahoa, originated from light volcanic magma. The second largest island, Negit, also of volcanic origin, arose about 2000 years ago. Due to the sharp shallowing of Lake Mono in the middle of the 20th century, Negit from the island turned into a peninsula.
In the past, Mono Lake occupied a much larger area. However, as a result of a program conducted from the late 1920s to the mid-1990s to supply the Los Angeles metropolis with water from local rivers, the level of Lake Mono dropped sharply (by 15 meters by 1994) so much so that the under water lime-tufa towers, one of the natural wonders of the lake. Only in 1994 was a program adopted to preserve a unique lake, after which the water level in it gradually began to rise. Currently, the salt content in the waters of Mono is 69 g / l (for comparison, in the ocean, this figure is 31.5 g / l ).
Biology
Due to the high salinity, no fish live in Mono Lake. At the same time, crustaceans of the species Artemia monica are found in large numbers in its waters, which are the most important food element for birds living on the lake. Up to 2 million birds of no less than 35 species nest on the shores of Mono. Among them should be called the American shiloklyuvka and lapwing ; in addition, the tricolor swimming fin , the round-necked swimming fin and other birds use the lake for recreation with annual migrations for wintering to tropical regions [1] .
The entire natural food chain of the animal kingdom of Mono Lake is based on unicellular algae, used for food by Artemia monica .
In 2009, unique bacteria GFAJ-1 were found in the lake. These microorganisms are notable for their ability to survive at very high concentrations of arsenic .
