Biography

Pavel Apollonovich Tutkovsky was born on March 1, 1858 in the village of Lipovets (Ukraine).

In 1877 he graduated from the Volyn Provincial Gymnasium with a silver medal [3] , and in 1882 - the natural department of Kiev University [4] .

In 1894–1895 Keeper of the mineralogical and geological classrooms of Kiev University.

From 1884 to 1902, he carried out geological studies on behalf of the Kiev Society of Naturalists in the Kiev , Volyn , Podolsk, Ekaterinoslav, Minsk, Grodno, Kherson and Tauride provinces [4] .

Since 1900, he was a member of the geological committee, on behalf of which he carried out geological research along the Kiev-Kovel railway being built and systematic and detailed geological research on the area of ​​the 16th sheet of the total 10-km map of European Russia [4] .

Since 1914, professor at Kiev University, since 1918 chairman of the natural section of the Ukrainian Scientific Society in Kiev .

In 1919 he headed the Physics and Mathematics Department of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, in 1924 - the Research Department of Geology of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, which in 1926 entered the Institute of Geology of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, which he headed until the end of his life.

Scientific works are devoted to mineralogy, petrography, hydrogeology, paleontology, regional quaternary geology, geomorphology. Developed micro-palaeontological method for the study of sedimentary rocks. He proposed a new aeolian theory of the origin of loess, the author of the classic work on dunes. He gave a general description of the groundwater of Ukraine, described the karst phenomena in Polesye.

Author of more than about 600 scientific works, including five monographs.
