The contents of the collection
In July 2009, two weeks after the death of Michael Jackson , it became known that on the basis of the video recordings of the last rehearsals of the singer for the failed tour a documentary musical film would be shot [1] . At the end of September, it was announced that the release of the tape in the rental will be accompanied by the release of the album-soundtrack, which will contain one new song - “ This Is It ” [2] . In early October, the full list of soundtrack compositions became known [3] . The publication consists of two CDs , the first of which contains the singer's hits, which were heard in the film “That's it” in the order of their appearance in the film [4] . The second disc contains four bonus tracks, it is: three demos of famous songs of Jackson and his poem “Planet Earth” [3] .
- "This Is It . " A song written by Jackson with Paul Anka in 1983 [5] . The recording of the demo version under the working title “I Never Heard” was found by the singers' testament performers among his personal belongings [5] . A line from the text - “This Is It” - coincided randomly with the name of the musician’s failed tour, so it was decided to make it the main theme of the film about him [6] . Backing vocals were recorded by the brothers of the singer, the band The Jacksons [7] . The version of the song in the orchestral arrangement completes the first disc of the publication [7] .
- "She's Out of My Life" (Demo) . " She's Out of My Life " is a ballad written by Tom Baler and released on Jackson's album Off the Wall in 1979 [8] . The collection This Is It included an early acoustic demo of the song [6] . The critic of the Consequence of Sound noted that this very emotional track is a single opportunity to hear the voice of the singer accompanied by just one musical instrument [6] .
- "Wanna Be Startin 'Somethin'" (Demo) . Funk " Wanna Be Startin 'Somethin' " was written by Jackson and entered the album Thriller in 1982 [9] . The collection features one of the latest demos of the composition, the Allmusic columnist described the details of what he heard: “In this track, the rhythm and guitar parts are ready. This version is close to the final version, with the exception of the brass parts ” [10] .
- "Beat It" (Demo) . “ Beat It ” is a composition combining rhythm and blues and rock genres. It was written by Jackson and released on the album Thriller [9] . This Is It included a raw demo of the song. Entertainment Weekly reviewer noted this track: “It allows you to catch a glimpse of the creative process of Jackson, in particular, it shows how the singer built vocal harmonies” [4] .
- Planet Earth . The poem "Planet Earth" was written by Jackson in the late 80s. At that time, he began work on his composition “ What About Us ” and conceived it as a trilogy . It was to consist of an orchestral introduction, the main part, and the poem should have been completed. The track did not get into the album Dangerous , Jackson considered that he was not ready, and the text of the poem was published in the book of the musician "Dancing Dream" [11] .
Critics' release and reaction
The compilation was released on October 26, 2009, two days before the premiere of the same film. This Is It was a big hit on the charts around the world. He led the charts of the USA , Canada , became the third in the UK and took the first line in the European Top 100 Albums European-wide chart [12] [13] [14] . The release has received numerous music certifications in various countries of the world.

According to the journalist Entertainment Weekly This Is It is not much different from the collections of the best hits of Jackson, released during his lifetime. “The second disc of the edition will be of the greatest interest to fans, although there are only 4 tracks in it,” writes the critic. “At the moment, this is a rare opportunity to hear the creative process of a musician, until the performers of his testament let the world hear more” [4] . Independent reviewer was displeased: “This album is an attempt to shake money out of the pockets of fans with minimal cost. There is only one new track on it. The publication should be called Is This It? (from English - “Is that all?”) ” [16] . Critic Consequence of Sound noted that only new recordings - 10% of the list of songs - justify the existence of the disc, despite the fact that according to preliminary estimates, Jackson left hundreds of unreleased songs on several hard drives [6] . Robert Christgau singled out two demos for the second edition of the disc: "Wanna Be Startin 'Somethin'" and "She's Out of My Life" [18] .
