Start of the path
Walter Casper was born on March 3, 1933 in Heidenheim an der Brenz ( German: Heidenheim an der Brenz ), Rottenburg-Stuttgart Germany diocese . He graduated from the seminary in Tübingen ( philosophy and doctoral theology ) and the seminary in Munich ( theology ).
Casper was ordained priest on April 6, 1957 in Rothenburg by the local Bishop Karl Joseph Leiprecht. In 1957 - 1958 - Vicar of the Parish of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Stuttgart . From 1958 to 1961, he taught at the Theological Seminary of Tübingen and was an assistant to professors Leo Scheffchik (the future cardinal ) and Hans Küng . Then he became a professor of dogmatic theology in Münster ( 1961 - 1969 ), and in 1969 became the dean of the theological faculty there . Since 1970 - Professor of Dogmatic Theology and Dean of the Theological Faculty in Tübingen . In the early 1980s he joined the International Theological Commission , and in 1985 he became a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences.
Bishop
He was appointed Bishop of Rottenburg-Stuttgart on April 4, 1989 . Dedicated to the rank of June 17, 1989 in the Cathedral of St. Martin in Rothenburg . The ordination was held by: Oscar Zayer, Archbishop of Freiburg , helped by: Karl Lehmann , Bishop of Mainz and Franz Joseph Künle, titular Bishop of Sorres and auxiliary Bishop of Rottenburg-Stuttgart .
In the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity
In 1994, Walter Casper became the co-chairman of the international Commission on the Lutheran-Catholic Dialogue. March 16, 1999, he was appointed first Secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity (left the bishop's department on May 31, 1999 ), and then on March 3, 2001, as its chairman. Casper worked on the creation of the Raven Document and became one of the first officials of the Catholic Church who commented on him (spoke to the press on the day of the completion of the commission’s work, November 16, 2007) [2]
Cardinal
Walter Casper was elevated to Cardinals by Pope John Paul II at the consistory dated February 21, 2001, and received the rank of Cardinal Deacon with Onyssanti-in-Via-Appia-Nuova titular deacon.

March 5, 2008, Cardinal Walter Casper turned 75 years old. In accordance with the Canon Law of the Roman Catholic Church, he submitted his resignation to the Pope.
On December 9, 2008, together with Cardinals Echegaray and Glemp, represented the delegation of the Holy See at the funeral of His Holiness Patriarch Alexy II of Moscow and All Russia .
February 1, 2009 represented the delegation of the Holy See at the ceremony of the enthronement of His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia Kirill .
Resignation
On June 25, 2010, Cardinal Casper held a press conference on the results of his work as chairman of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity, at which he announced his imminent imminent resignation. [3]
On July 1, 2010, Cardinal Kasper was resigned and the new chairman of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity, Bishop Kurt Koch of Basel , who was elevated to the rank of Archbishop.

Unique case
March 5, 2013, Cardinal Walter Kasper turned 80 years old and he lost his right to participate in the Conclave, but due to the fact that Pope Benedict XVI resigned as a member on February 28, 2013, and according to the Universi Dominici Gregis constitution , the cardinals should not be over eighty years old the day before the Pope’s death or resignation, Cardinal Casper participated in the Conclave, even though he was eighty years old. Thus, he became the first (since 1963) cardinal over 80 years old who participated in the Conclave.
