Madonie ( Italian. Madonie , sic . Madunìi ) - a mountain range in the north of the island of Sicily .

Madonie Mountains are located in the province of Palermo . The highest point is Pizzo-Carbonara (1979 m ), on the island in height only inferior to Etna . Two meters below the top of the Pizzo-Antenna . Madonie, together with the mountains Nebrodi and Peloritani form the Sicilian Apennines .
On the slopes of the mountains grow forests ( oak , chestnut , beech ), at the base - Mediterranean shrubs . Together with Nebrodi, Madonie is one of the native places of the Sicilian endemic fir , which has only about 30 trees to date. [one]
In 1989, the eponymous national park of about 39 thousand hectares was formed on the territory of the mountains. [2]
On the slopes of Madonie are the sources of the longest river Sicily Salso .
