History
The Lotus 98T was the development of the 1986 Lotus 97T . Of the four chassis that were built, three were designed for team leader Ayrton Senna , who spent the second year with the Lotus team, and another to his teammate Johnny Dumfries .
The chassis, designed by Gerard Ducaruj and Martin Ogilvy, had a lower profile than its predecessor, since a restriction on the amount of fuel was introduced - 195 liters.
A new 6-cylinder V-shaped Renault EF15B turbocharged engine with a volume of 1,500 cm³ with a camber angle of 90 ° and a turbocharger on each block, creating an overpressure of the air-fuel mixture from 4 to 5.5 bar, was installed on the mid-engined machine. Depending on the pressure, the maximum engine power reached 1,200-1,300 hp.
The gearbox was of two options: normal, five-speed and six-speed. The latter was not reliable enough, so Senna used a five-speed, and Dumfries was entrusted with testing the new items. The inner parts of both boxes were manufactured by Hewland.
Other distinctive features of the model were: two-stage chassis height adjustment, water injection into the intercoolers, side pontoons and an advanced (at that time) fuel consumption microcomputer.
There were rumors in the paddock about the Lotus 98T design not complying with the rules, but no one filed an official protest.
