Description
Small springtails (usually from 0.7 to 1.5 mm) with a compact body and short antennae and legs. Some species, such as Brachystomella parvula , are cosmopolitan. About 130 species are known, half of which belong to the genus Brachystomella (75 species), and half of the genera are monotypic. [2] Collembolids of the Brachystomellidae family belong to the Neanuroidea superfamily from the Poduromorpha (or order) suborder. [3] As a result of phylogenetic analysis, the family was recognized as monophyletic. [4] A fossil species † of Bellingeria cornua Christiansen & Pike, 2002 is described from the Upper Cretaceous of Canada. [5]
