Biography
Born in the family of a priest, in 1839 he entered the Makaryevsky Theological College, from 1844 he studied at the Kostroma Theological Seminary . After graduating from the Kiev Theological Academy ( 1853 ), he was appointed a literature teacher at the Kostroma Theological Seminary. On May 22, 1855, he was approved as a master of theology (the dissertation is “Study of Biblical Chronology”).
In 1857 he was widowed. On July 5, 1857, he received monastic tonsure with the name Sergius, on July 6 he was ordained a hierodeacon , and on July 13, at a hieromonk . In 1859 he was elevated to the rank of Cathedral Hieromonk of the Donskoy Monastery .
On September 25, 1861, he was elevated to the rank of archimandrite and on December 30, he was appointed inspector and professor at the Moscow Theological Seminary .
October 25, 1863 appointed rector of the Znamensky Monastery .
On August 12, 1866 he was appointed rector of the Bethany Theological Seminary .
October 29, 1876 awarded the degree of Doctor of Theology for his work "Complete Months of the East."
October 28, 1880 appointed rector of the Andronikov Monastery .
On May 30, 1882 he was consecrated bishop of Kovensky , vicar of the Lithuanian diocese.
On June 7, 1885, he was transferred to the Department of Mogilev with the title Bishop of Mogilev and Mstislavsky.
On November 21, 1892 he was appointed Archbishop of Vladimir and Suzdal .
May 6, 1900 was awarded a diamond cross on the hood .
Honorary Member of the Imperial Orthodox Palestinian Society .
He died on November 20, 1904 and was buried in the Assumption Cathedral of Vladimir.
