Dziani was one of the recognized leaders of the Republic of Venice.
In 1167, Sebastiano Dziani, among the twelve richest Venetian citizens, supported the Lombard League . After the battle of Legnano in which the troops of the Holy Roman Empire were defeated, Venice acts as a mediator in the negotiations. In July 1177, negotiations between Pope Alexander III and Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa take place in the Basilica of San Marco . The result was a reconciliation of the parties, and the emperor agreed to recognize the supremacy of the pope.
Becoming the Doge in 1172, Sebastiano began the urban development reform of Venice. He divided the city into districts, moved the shipyard further from residential and public buildings. Another reform was the change in the doge's election procedure.
In 1177, Pope Alexander III , for the services provided by Venice in the fight against Emperor Frederick Barbarossa , first married the Doge and the Sea. Dad pulled the ring from Doge’s finger Sebstiano Dziani and offered to throw him into the sea. After that, every year the Doge threw a consecrated golden ring into the sea, and with the words Desponsamus te, mare ("We will marry you, Sea") declared that Venice and the sea are an indissoluble whole.
