Description and Symbols
The coat of arms of the Vologda region was developed on the basis of the historical coat of arms of the Vologda province in the second half of the XIX century .
Heraldic description of the coat of arms of the Vologda region:
“In a scarlet (red) field, a silver-colored right hand emerges from silver clouds, holding a golden, jeweled power and a silver sword with a golden hilt, set in a band; at the head of the shield is the Russian imperial crown, as it was depicted in the provincial coat of arms, with flowing azure (blue, blue) ribbons ”.
The statutory official interpretation of the main elements of the coat of arms:
- Hand with a sword - a symbol of justice, the legal court, as well as the protection of the Fatherland
- Power - a sign of power, statehood, rights of the subject of the Russian Federation
- The imperial crown symbolizes the historical state territorial status of the Vologda land. The crown is a traditional heraldic sign of high dignity and power.
- Chervlen (red color) of the field of arms symbolizes power and courage, gold serves as a designation of abundance and power, silver - nobility, light and purity
The coat of arms of the Vologda region was approved on October 11, 1995 [1] and entered into the State Heraldic Register of the Russian Federation under the number 101.
Reproduction of the coat of arms is governed by the “Law of the Vologda region on the coat of arms of the Vologda region” .
History of coat of arms
The prototype of the coat of arms was the emblem of a regiment formed in 1700 in Novgorod , renamed Vologda in 1708 . In 1712, the emblem was depicted on the regimental banner .
Initially, it was a hand coming out of the cloud with a saber curve, resting on a power, at the top of a laurel branch. In this form, the emblem entered the special Znamenny Armorial in 1712 . Her motto "through iron and gold" in the interpretation of Peter I means "through the battle to victory and glory."
In the future, the emblem was improved, began to represent the composition, compiled according to the heraldic canons , and in this form is depicted in the new Znamenny Armorial of 1729 - 1730 . In it, under No. 35, it says " Vologda, against the old, golden power, behind it from the cloud is a hand with a white sword with a golden hilt, a red field ."
On October 2, 1780, the emblem was approved by Catherine II as the emblem of the city of Vologda . In the second half of the XIX century, the shield of the coat of arms was crowned with the imperial crown (used in the emblems of provinces, capitals and provincial cities), framed with oak leaves and St. Andrew's ribbon (blue, in the emblems of the provinces). On July 5, 1878, the highest symbol is affirmed as the emblem of the Vologda province.
Two years after the adoption of the coat of arms, the region gained a flag . The emblem of the Vologda region is depicted on the flag in the upper corner near the hoist.
In the Beginning of 1995, the artist O.V. Sviridenko developed the first project of the coat of arms of the Vologda region after publishing the coat of arms of the Vologda province and the city of Vologda (sample 1994) by publishing a project in the regional newspaper "Russian North". In the summer of 1995, the draft was adopted in first reading by the Legislative Assembly and sent for examination to the Heraldic Council under the President of the Russian Federation. On September 11, 1995, the governor of the Vologda region signed the Law "On the Coat of Arms of the Vologda Region".
At the beginning of the XXI century, a full version of the coat of arms of the Vologda region was developed with additional elements: a crown, supporters, a slogan and a ribbon. The project passed a federal examination in the Heraldic Council under the President of the Russian Federation [2] , but to this day has not been approved (imposed a "veto" by the ex-governor V. Ye. Pozgalev).
