Patriarchs of the Coptic Catholic Church - a list of patriarchs of the Coptic Catholic Church with years of rule.
The Coptic Catholic Church was formed in 1741 , when the Coptic Patriarch of Jerusalem Anastasius entered into full communion with Rome. Pope Benedict XIV established an apostolic vicariate for the Coptic Catholic community; however, Anastasius soon returned to the Coptic Orthodox Church , but the line of Coptic apostolic vicars was continued.
In 1824, the Holy See created for the Coptic Catholics a patriarchy, which however existed only on paper because of the opposition of its activities by the authorities of the Ottoman Empire . The patriarchate was recognized in 1829, and then permission was granted to build churches. With the death of Patriarch Maxim in 1831, the patriarchy again virtually ceased to exist.
In 1895, Pope Leo XIII re-established the Coptic Patriarchate and in 1899 raised Bishop Cyril to the rank of patriarch with the title “Patriarch of Alexandria and All Copts”. From 1908 to 1947, the post of patriarch was again vacant.
