Eye-Fi is a type of SD memory card with Wi-Fi technology built-in hardware.

Features of use
Cards can be used in any supported digital camera. The card is inserted into the corresponding slot on the camera, receiving power from the camera and at the same time expanding its functionality. The card can also be used in cameras equipped with a slot for CF cards through the corresponding SD-CF adapter, however, the card’s operation through the adapter is not supported by the manufacturer, it is not guaranteed [1] and, according to many users, may be accompanied by a decrease in the radius of the card’s operation, file corruption and formatting errors.
A camera equipped with such a card can transfer the captured photographs or videos to a computer, to the Internet to pre-programmed resources that carry out photo or video hosting of this kind of content. Administration, access to settings and operation of such cards is carried out via Wi-Fi from a PC - or Mac- compatible computer through a browser or Eye-Fi Center . The card works only through pre-registered Wi-Fi networks, WEP and WPA2 encryption are supported.
Varieties of cards
Eye-Fi cards are designed in such a way that at the hardware level they differ only in volume, and the set of functions related to working in WiFi networks is determined by the settings of the internal software (Firmware). At different times, many different option packages were released, some of which are given below. Currently, only three packages are relevant:
- Connect X2 - Class 6, 4 GB, JPEG;
- Mobile X2 - Class 6, 8 GB, JPEG;
- PRO X2 - Class 6, 8 GB, RAW / JPEG, works with open Wi-Fi networks, performs geolocation positioning of your photos using the Skyhook service.
- PRO X2 - Class 10, 16 GB, RAW / JPEG, works with open Wi-Fi networks, performs geolocation positioning of your photos.
The manufacturer’s website provides a more detailed comparison of the released Eye-Fi card models.
In September 2011, SanDisk launched Eye-Fi cards for sales in the EMEA region (Europe, Middle East and Africa). Two models are currently available: 4 GB, JPEG and 8 GB, JPEG. Their distinctive feature from the original Eye-Fi cards is lower performance (Class 4) and a red plastic memory card body, and they were only officially available in Russia (unlike the original ones, which are still positioned only for the US market).
Since September 2016, online support for the client program working with these cards has been disabled, so users have lost the ability to fully use them. The previously configured cards continued to function, but now there is no possibility to change any settings (for example, choose another wifi network). At the moment, it makes no sense to buy old card models due to the lack of the ability to use a wifi module.
Memory cards with built-in Wi-Fi modules, but using a different technology, are also produced by Toshiba and Transcend .
Variants of Eye-Fi cards issued at different times.
- Eye-Fi Explore Video - this card automatically searches for open Wi-Fi networks near you and makes geolocation detection of your photos using the Skyhook service.
