WebBBS or, in the old spelling, WEB-BBS (from the Web - Web and BBS - Electronic Bulletin Board) - a descendant of terminal BBS, which had great popularity in the late 80s - early 90s.
Unlike conventional BBS, WebBBS is built on the Internet , not Fidonet , although these types of BBS can be combined on one system.
A list of commonly used WebBBS creation software includes:
- HTTP server (implementation of navigation through BBS services, as well as the provision of various supporting information on the operation of BBS)
- NNTP server (used for the distribution of echo conferences . It is considered a center service that provides users with the opportunity of open communication with each other)
- POP3 / SMTP servers (used to organize personal mail. They give users the opportunity to communicate privately with each other)
- FTP server (allows users to use the file archive located on the server, as well as upload their own files)
- A service for organizing dial-up modems (for example, RASS in Microsoft Windows NT ).
WebBBS has several advantages over terminal BBS, which makes WebBBS a more attractive service for both the end user and the system operator:
- Easy to implement any additional non-standard functions using third-party software.
- Integration with other networks ( Internet , etc.) and exchange of information with them. An easier way to create a WebBBS network.
Currently, modem dial-oriented WebBBSs are gradually dying. Services that provide access exclusively through Internet channels are gaining ground. [one]
