At the end of World War I, Vian attended artillery officer training courses and subsequently served as an artillery officer on the battle cruiser Australia , the battleship Thunderrer and others. In the early 1930s he was appointed commander of the destroyer Active , and later commanded several destroyer fleets.
In the spring of 1940, the destroyer " Cossack ", commanded by Vian, freed the captured British sailors held on board the German ship "Altmark" ; a year later, the flotilla commanded by Vian tried to torpedo the German battleship Bismarck the night before his death. Vian spent most of the war at the Mediterranean Theater , commanding a cruiser squadron, and at the end of the war, Vian was assigned command of the carrier force of the British Pacific Fleet. After the war, Vian was the Sea Lord of the Admiralty , commanded the fleet of the metropolis . In 1952 he retired with the rank of Fleet Admiral and further held the position of director in commercial firms.
