Geographical position
The village of Sokolovo is located on the right bank of the Mzha River, above the confluence of the Bolshaya Vilovka River . The riverbed is winding, forming many estuaries and swampy lakes, including Lake Koloda , Lake Hvorostanoye , Lake Komarova Yama . Upstream at a distance of 5 km is the village of Kolesniki , downstream at a distance of 5 km is the village of Vodyakhovka , on the opposite bank is the village of Mirgorody . At 6 km there are railway stations Platform 16 km and Pervomaisky . The highway T-2112 passes through the village.
History
- 1660 - founded as the village of Sokolov ( Ukrainian Sokolіv ).
- 1971 - renamed the village of Sokolovo .
Fight at Sokolovo
In the battles for the defense of the village against the Nazi troops , the 1st battalion of the Czechoslovak army received baptism of fire. March 8 - March 9, 1943, the battalion, together with Soviet troops, repelled the numerous attacks of tanks and infantry of the enemy. During the battle, about 300 enemy soldiers and officers, 19 tanks and 6 armored personnel carriers were destroyed. Losses of the battalion amounted to 112 soldiers and commanders killed, 106 - wounded, suffered the loss of the Soviet units, who fought together with the Czechoslovakia.
For courage and heroism 84 battalion fighters were awarded Soviet orders and medals. Lieutenant Otakar Yarosh was the first foreign citizen to be awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union (posthumously). Another 87 fighters received Czechoslovak orders and medals.
