Petrovsky-Stern, Yochanan

Yohanan Petrovsky-Stern ( born Yohanan Petrovsky-Shtern ; born April 6, 1962 , Kiev ) is a Soviet and American historian , philologist, essayist , translator. Professor of Jewish History at Northwestern University ( Illinois , USA ).

Biography

Born in Kiev, in the family of a famous philologist Miron Petrovsky , the younger sister is a Russian philologist, a German journalist and writer Katya Petrovskaya (born 1970 ).

In 1984 he graduated from the Romano-Germanic department of the philological faculty of Taras Shevchenko Kiev State University .

In 1988 he defended his thesis for the degree of candidate of philological sciences on the topic “The Poetics of Grabriel Garcia Marquez” at Moscow State University .

In 2001, he received a Ph.D. in history from Brandeis University ( Massachusetts ) in modern Jewish history.

He was awarded the Hebrew University in Jerusalem . Visiting Professor at the Spertusov Institute in Chicago .

He taught at the Graduate School of Social Sciences in Paris , as well as in Poland and the Kiev-Mohyla Academy in Ukraine. Author of monographs and articles.

Known for his work on Jewish history, criticism of the work of A. I. Solzhenitsyn, “ Two hundred years together ” [1] .

Translator of compositions by Borges , Ortega-i-Gasset , Leonardo Shashi , Chesterton into Russian.
