General Information

Ai is one of the two daughters of Tadamasa and Fusako Sugiyama; her sister's name is Mai. Tokyo- born mom has her own academy in Japan , where a number of young Japanese tennis players train.

Sports career

1990-99

Ai Sugiyama held the first match in the professional tournament at the age of 15 in Tokyo ( Nichirei International tournament) in doubles. In 1992, she first entered the main draw of the WTA singles tournament and won one ITF tournament in singles and doubles. At the tournament in Osaka , being on the 554th place in the WTA ranking , she consecutively defeated three rivals who had a higher rating before losing to the 25th racket of the world Kimiko Date .

In 1994, Sugiyama won her first doubles tournament ( Japan Open , with Mami Donosiro ). In October of that year, she first entered the top hundred tennis players in the world by rating, and a month later reached the finals of the tournament in Surabaya in singles. In 1995, she reached the 1/8 finals at the French Open ; reaching the finals of the tournament in Auckland , in November she first became one of the 50 strongest tennis players in singles. In 1996, she won her first career victory over tennis players from the top ten in the ranking: Yana Novotnaya (the tenth racket of the world at the time of the meeting) and Anke Huber (fifth, in the third round of Wimbledon ). At the Atlanta Olympics in singles, she reaches the third round, where she is inferior to Novotnaya. Together with Kyoko Nagatsuka, they drop out of the fight in the first round. In the same year, with the Japanese team, she achieves the highest success for herself, reaching the semifinals of the Federation Cup , where her team lost 5-0 to the US team.

In 1997, Sugiyama won the first singles tournament in his homeland in Tokyo. Twice more she played in the finals, including in the category I tournament in Moscow , where she won the ninth racket of the world Arancu Sanchez-Vicario in the semifinal. As a result, in November she entered the twenty of the strongest tennis players in the world.

In 1998, Sugiyama won four tournaments in pairs, all with Elena Likhovtseva ( Russia ), and two in singles. According to the results of the season, she first gets into the final tournament of the WTA tour in doubles. The following year, he and Likhovtseva win two WTA tournaments, play in the quarter-finals of the French Open and again enter the final tournament of the year; Sugiyama also made it to the finals of the Grand Slam tournament for the first time: in the mixed doubles, he and the Indian Bhupati win the US Open .

2000-09

In 2000, Sugiyama won seven doubles tournaments, six of them with Julie Alar-Decuji , including his first title in the Grand Slam, won at the US Open , as well as two category I tournaments. They also reach the final of the Wimbledon tournament and the semi-finals of the French Open. In singles, Sugiyama makes it to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, defeating the fourth racket of the world, Marie Pierce , in the fourth round; in the quarter finals, she is stopped by Jennifer Capriati . At the Sydney Olympics, she leaves the fight in singles already in the first round, losing to Elena Dokic , and in pairs she and Nana Miyagi defeat a couple from Indonesia in the first round and lose to the Thai in the second. In October, Sugiyama rises to the first line in the ranking of tennis players performing in pairs, becoming the first Japanese woman to achieve this success.

Another successful year in Sugiyama’s career is 2003 . With her new partner Kim Kleisters, she wins eight doubles tournaments, including two Grand Slam tournaments: French Open and Wimbledon. In both Grand Slam tournaments, they beat the Spanish-Argentinean couple Ruano Pascual - Suarez in the final. She also wins two singles tournaments and reaches the eighth finals in three of the four Grand Slam tournaments. As a result, she gets into the final tournament of the WTA tour in both singles and doubles. In singles, she wins one match out of three in the group stage (at the second racket of the world Justine Henin ) and does not reach the playoffs. In pairs, he and Kleisters reach the finals, where they are inferior to Ruano Pasqual and Suarez.

Due to his success in 2003, Sugiyama is among the top ten single-player tennis players and in February 2004 , after the next tournament won, takes the highest in his career eighth position in the singles ranking. This year, she once again enters the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam tournament in singles (at Wimbledon), and again in the fourth round in the US Open. In pairs, having parted with Claysters, she spends a rather inexpressive season by her standards, but still wins two tournaments and reaches the final of the Wimbledon tournament with South African Liesel Huber . At the Olympics in Athens , paired with Sinobu Asagoe, they, being sown fifth, reach the semifinals, where they are inferior to the Spanish pair Martinez- Ruano Pascual. In the match for bronze medals, they lose to the Argentines Suarez and Tarabini . In singles, Sugiyama, seeded under the eighth number, loses again in the first round.

Sugiyama’s recent success in tournaments was paired with Daniela Gantuhova and Katarina Srebotnik . With Gantukhova, she won three tournaments and played seven more times in the final, including twice in Grand Slam tournaments. With Srebotnik, they won four tournaments and reached the final four more times, including two Grand Slam tournaments and the 2007 WTA Tour final tournament. The last time Sugiyama made it to the Grand Slam tournament final in 2009 in Australia with Gantuhova. At the Beijing Olympics, she paired with Ayumi Morita lost in the second round to future champions Venus and Serena Williams 5-7, 2-6.

In 2009, Sugiyama announced her intention to complete participation in tennis competitions after the Toray Pan Pacific Open tournament in September in Tokyo , where she lost in the first round in singles, but reached the finals in pairs (with Daniela Gantukhova ). [7] At this point, he and Gantuhova were among the eight strongest couples in the world, and Sugiyama herself was ranked sixth in the ranking of the strongest tennis players in doubles.

Team appearances

As part of the Federation Cup, Ai Sugiyama held 47 games for the Japanese national team. Her highest achievement was reaching the semifinals of the World Group, where the Japanese lost to the Americans 5-0. In doubles she won 12 victories with five defeats, in singles on her account 13 victories and 17 defeats. Among the rivals she managed to beat in singles were Marie Pierce (in 1997) and Ursula Radvanskaya (in 2009).
