After graduating from college at the University of Toronto with a degree in English literature, Kotcheff began his television career at the age of 24 from joining the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation , when television in the country was largely in its infancy. Kotcheff was the youngest director in the company where he worked for two years on the General Motors Theater and other shows before leaving Canada in 1958 to live and work in the UK .
He was inspired by his compatriot Sydney Newman, who was a dramatic director at the same corporation and moved to the UK to take a similar position at ABC, one of the local franchise owners of the ITV network, which also produced a significant part of the national broadcast network for the channel. In ABC, Newman directed the popular dramatic program Armchair Theater, and he directed Kotcheff, who directed several dramas between 1958 and 1960, as the director of this series .
