International Physics Olympiad for schoolchildren ( IPhO - International Physics Olympiad ) is an annual international physics competition among schoolchildren from different countries.
The official goal of the Olympiad is to strengthen contacts in the field of school physical education, to promote the formation of friendships and future cooperation in the scientific community.
Competitions are held in two stages, one day - an examination in theory (it is necessary to solve three problems in five hours), the other day - laboratory work, with rest between the stages.
Competitions are individual, and the offset by country is unofficial. Students who are under twenty years old are allowed to participate in the Olympiad.
The official language of the Olympiad is English.
History
The first Olympiad was organized in Warsaw by Professor Cheslav Shchyschlovsky. One of the reasons for creating competitions was the success of international mathematical olympiads (IMO) (since 1959 ) and the experience accumulated in their conduct. The difference from IMO is that in addition to theoretical problems, participants also solve experimental ones. This fact increases the complexity and cost of olympiads.
Initially, IPhO was a project of the countries of the socialist bloc (Central European). Five countries took part in the first Olympiad: Bulgaria , Hungary , Poland , Romania , Czechoslovakia . In the second Olympiad, held in Budapest , three more participating countries were added: the GDR , the USSR , and Yugoslavia .
The Sixth Olympiad ( Sofia , 1971 ) is remarkable in that it is the first Olympiad in which a non-European state ( Cuba ) and a western state ( France ) took part.
In 1984, France was disqualified for 20 years for a late refusal to hold the Olympics.
Russia
In 2007, for the first time in the Russian team there was a girl - Ksenia Solovyova, who won a gold medal. [one]
In 2017, Russian students for the first time won 5 gold medals [2] .
Selection for the International Physical Olympiad for schoolchildren
Russia
The selection of participants from Russia is traditionally carried out in the form of training and competitive fees. The gathering of candidates for the Russian team at the International Physical Olympiad serves to select and prepare schoolchildren for participation in IPhO. Fees are held at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and are organized by the Laboratory for Work with Gifted Children .
Winners and prize-winners of the 10th grade of the All-Russian Physics Olympiad are invited to the first summer training camps. According to their results, 16 people are selected who are invited to winter training camps. According to the results of the winter training camp, as well as the All-Russian round of the Olympics next year, 8 people are selected who are invited to the final summer camp. Based on their results, the Russian national team on IPhO is formed, consisting of five people. The three others go as the Russian national team to the Tuymaad International Olympiad in Yakutia.
