Biography
Born in Patavia . He wrote his compositions under the emperors Claudius and Nero . The last 12 years of his life was blind. He wrote a biography of Sallust and an essay directed against the critics of Virgil (both of these works were not preserved).
In the years 54 - 57 he wrote comments on all the speeches of Cicero, but only five survived to our time. The comments of Pedian are valuable in that the two Cicero’s speeches described by him are lost and Pedian’s work allows them to be reconstructed. It is also important that Pedian used reliable sources that did not reach us, such as acts of the Senate .
Pedian’s currently known comments (on speeches against Piso, for Cornelius, Skavr, Milon, and in toga candida) were found in 1416 in one manuscript of the Gallen Library in badly damaged form. Later, the manuscript itself was lost. The comments contain many factual and grammatical explanations. It is believed that they are written in a good style.
The pedian was also mistakenly attributed to the comments found in the same manuscript for “Divination against Cecilius” and to three speeches against Verres, however, it has now been proved that they belong to a later author.
