Biography
Born in Ivanovo-Voznesensk (now Ivanovo ) in 1909. In 1925 he entered the history department of the Vyatka Pedagogical Institute, graduated in 1930 . In 1933 he defended his thesis on history (supervisor B. D. Grekov ). In 1938 he became a research associate at the Leningrad department of the Institute of History of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR , where he worked until the end of his life. From 1936 to 1941 he taught at the Faculty of History of Leningrad State University , read lectures at the Department of History of the USSR , in 1941 he joined the party .
In 1941 he went to the front, went through the whole war , was awarded two orders. In 1947 he returned to the Faculty of History, where he taught until 1956 , after which he devoted himself to the Institute of History. In 1947 he defended his doctoral thesis. In 1950, for his research received the Stalin Prize of the second degree for 1949. He died at the age of 57 in 1965 .
Scientific Activities
Smirnov is one of the founders of the historical school for the study of the history of the peasantry and agrarian history. Among the pupils of this school are such historians as Arkady Georgievich Mankov (Honored Scientist of the RSFSR) and Yuri Georgievich Alekseev ( Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation ).
