Amasonas (region)

Amazonas ( Spanish Amazonas ) is a region in the north of Peru . The administrative center of the region is the city of Chachapoyas , the first city in terms of population is Bagua Grande . The population is 379 thousand people. The region specializes in agriculture, hydropower, and oil production.

Geography

The region is located in the relatively developed and densely populated part of the Peruvian selva , in the north of the country. The relief of the region is low mountains, eastern spurs of the Andes . In the south, the mountains are high, up to 4000 meters in height. In the northeast, the relief is low. Almost the entire region is covered by rainforests . In the central part flows the river Maranion . The river bed passes through a large number of pongos . One of the features of the region is a large number of waterfalls. Among them are some of the highest waterfalls in the world - Gokta and Umbilla .

Population

The population is 379 thousand people. The share of urban population is 41.5%. The population density is 9.7 people / km². The population is evenly distributed, with the exception of the far north, where the population density is approximately 2 people / km². The national composition is dominated by mestizos (75.2%), as well as representatives of the Aguaruna and Uambisa tribes (about 13%) belonging to the Khivar language family. The gender structure is dominated by men - 50.4%, women - 49.6%. The birth rate is high, a third of the population are children under 14 years of age. The population growth is almost zero (0.09% per year). Literacy rate is 83.6%. Confessional composition: Catholics - 63.9%, 23% - Protestants; a high proportion of non-religious (relative to other Peruvian regions) - 8% [2] .

Attractions

  • Hokta Waterfall - one of the highest waterfalls in the world, height - 771 meters. The waterfall was opened only in 2002, and the height was measured in 2006.
  • Yumbilla Waterfall - one of the highest waterfalls in the world, height - 895.5 meters. Nearby there are two more high waterfalls - Chinata (560 meters) and Pabelon (400 meters).
  • Kuelap - an ancient fortress of the Chachapoya civilization, conquered by the Incas
  • Sarcophagi of Karakhia - sarcophagi from the earth and stones, having the appearance of human mummies. Located on an inaccessible hillside, they have an impressive height (2.5 meters). Their cultural affiliation remains controversial.
  • The burial complex Revash is a medieval grave necropolis of the Chachapoya culture.
  • The Leymebamba Museum , which stores 219 mummies found near Lake Kondorov (its other name is Lake Mumiy).
  • Lake Kondorov at an altitude of 2600 meters, where in 1997 more than 200 mummies were found.
  • Ljaktan or Anguyo Alto ( Spanish Llactán o Anguyo Alto ) - an archaeological site, which is a series of semicircular buildings that served to monitor the nearby valleys of Utcubamba, Maranion and Chinchipe.
  • Archaeological Site of Kakachaken
  • Shipasbamba is a tourist area, with several eco-parks, where a wide variety of tropical flora and fauna is represented, and sulfuric thermal springs.
  • La Halka - the oldest Spanish city in the region, a small mountain town with traditional colonial architecture
