The main character of the game Ōkami is the sun goddess of the Japanese pantheon Shinto named Amaterasu , who took the form of a white she-wolf . The name of the game is a homonymous pun : the word Ōkami ( 狼 ) in Japanese means “ wolf ”, however the kanji characters used in the name of the game ( 大 神 ) are also pronounced as Ōkami and mean “great deity ”, thus the great deity is the protagonist of the game -wolf. The same characters ( 大 神 ) are also used in writing the full name of the goddess: Amaterasu O: -mi-kami .
The game has a sequel called Ōkamiden: Chīsaki Taiyō ( 大 神 伝 ~ 小 さ き 太陽 ~ ), released in 2010 for the Nintendo DS .

Gameplay
In Ōkami, the player controls the game heroine Amaterasu. Special filters make the three-dimensional image look like a celluloid animation, the so-called self-shading .
The player can use the magic of the "Divine brush", with which he can draw on the screen like a washi . The brush is used in battle, puzzles , as well as in various tasks. For example, if you draw a loop, then a strong wind is caused; you can draw bridges across the river or cut the enemy in half by drawing a line through it. New opportunities for using the brush open as you move in the game.
Story
One hundred years ago, the eight-headed demon Orochi ruled over the village of Kamiki. Swordsman Nagi, whose beloved should have been sacrificed to a demon, decided to put an end to this. The white she-wolf Shiranui came to his aid, and together they managed to imprison Oroti. But victory came at a great price: Shiranui was poisoned by the demon's poison and soon died. After a hundred years, the village still holds the annual festival in honor of Nagi and Shiranui, but the upcoming holiday is overshadowed by misfortune: Orochi broke free, imposing a terrible curse on the whole country. The spirit of the tree Sakuya called for help the sun goddess Amaterasu, whose reincarnation was Shiranui. However, after the death of her physical form, Amaterasu lost most of her magic, and she will have to find the lost Techniques of the Divine Brush in order to defeat Orochi again and cleanse the earth from the curse.
