"In 1942, I was awarded the first Order of the Red Banner ...

... It was in September. And then came a damp, bad autumn. Charged rains. But the regiment flew without interruption. Difficult it was flying. Often the goal was closed by clouds or fog. But the task must be completed at all costs. Each combat mission in these difficult conditions added to our experience, helped us develop tactics of dealing with the enemy. ”

Tatyana spent more than half of her sorties in a carriage with Maria Smirnova . Pilot and navigator firmly made friends.

Tatiana Sumarokova took part in the defense of the North Caucasus, the attack on the Kuban , in the Novorossiysk-Taman offensive. On New Year's Eve, the crew of Sumarokova- Tikhomirova , performing an assignment near Kerch, came under anti-aircraft fire. The plane was hit by a direct hit. Tikhomirová managed to bring the flame down by sliding, but the car continued to lose height. There was only one way out - to go to the sea. Fortunately, the flight ended well: the girls reached the eastern outskirts of the Chushka Spit and landed in the disposition of their troops.
