Roads

The first roads that we understand in their modern meaning appeared in Armenia in the 19th century . Four multi-lane “ autobahns ” disperse from Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, to Ararat , Ashtarak , Echmiadzin and Sevan .

The Meghri highway on the Yerevan - Ararat section is double: a fast “ highway ” is going around the cities to the south, and from the north is an old highway parallel to it, along which there are nearby buses. There is no such phenomenon as passes closed for the winter in Armenia .

The main routes of Armenia with the highest traffic are:

  •   M1 : Yerevan - Ashtarak - Gyumri - Bavra (checkpoint on the border with Georgia ). The length of the route is 173.7 km.
  •   M2 : Yerevan - Ararat - Kapan - Meghri - Agarak (checkpoint on the border with Iran ). The length of the route is 384.3 km.
  •   M3 : Yerevan - Ashtarak - Vanadzor - Gogavan (checkpoint on the border with Georgia ). The length of the route is 183.7 km.
  •   M4 : Yerevan - Sevan - Azatamut .
  •   M5 : Yerevan - Armavir - Ushakert (inactive checkpoint at the closed border with Turkey ).

In recent years, parts of several large roads in Armenia have been transformed into multi-lane highways with separated oncoming lanes. With this transformation, the numbering of these parts of the roads does not change.
