Biography
Anna Catherine was the eldest daughter of Elector Joachim III Friedrich of Brandenburg and his first wife Catherine of Brandenburg-Küstrinsky , daughter of the margrave of Brandenburg-Kustrin Hans of Kystrinsky , son of Joachim I of Brandenburg .
Christian met the future bride during his trip to Germany in 1595 and decided to marry her. In 1596, Anna Catherine attended her coronation with her parents, and on November 27, 1597, their wedding took place in Haderslevhus Castle. The following year, on June 11, Anna Catherine was crowned. In this marriage were born six children, three of whom died in early childhood:
- Frederick (1599-1599), died in infancy;
- Christian (1603–1647), was married to Magdalena Sibylne of Saxony ;
- Sofia (1605-1605), died in infancy;
- Elizabeth (1607-1608), died in infancy;
- Frederick III (1609–1670), King of Denmark and Norway, was married to Sophia Amalia of Braunschweig-Lüneburg ;
- Ulrich (1611-1633), Bishop of Schwerin.
Little is known about the life of Anna Catherine. She was especially appreciated for her modesty and piety. Apparently, she did not have any influence on the political life in the kingdom, although she often accompanied Christian on his trips. There was no mention of whether their marriage was happy, but in the last years of her life the king had mistresses, among whom was the maid of honor, Queen Kirsten Madsdatter.
Queen Anna Catherine died in Copenhagen and was buried in the Roskilde Cathedral .
