History

M73 Denny Hume chassis 1973 in Goodwood

On the M23 car, the conventional Ford Cosworth DFV engine was used, but it was trained by the Nicholson engine tuning company. This allowed to increase the power to 490 hp . The car had a very aerodynamically efficient body shape.

He took part in the third Grand Prix of the 1973 Championship in South Africa , and Denny Hume won the pole position in the first race. Hume and Peter Revson scored 3 wins that season. In 1974 , Emerson Fittipaldi moved from Lotus to McLaren . His knowledge of the successful car Lotus 72 helped to finalize the McLaren M23, and in that season Fittipaldi and McLaren scored their victories - the second in the rider's personal offset and the first in the Constructors' Championship of the World Cup for the team, ahead of Ferrari , Tyrrell and Lotus .

Further development in 1975 , including the 6-speed gearbox (a novelty for that time), helped Fittipaldi and McLaren to take the second position in both championships behind Niki Lauda at the Ferrari 312T . The team experimented with different body configurations, including aerodynamic wings in front of the rear wheels, tried various nose profiles and extended bodies in front of the rear wheels [1] . Most of these changes were adopted for the M23 and its successor, the M26 . At the end of the 1975 season, Fittipaldi decided to leave the team in order to drive the car under the brand name of his brother Wilson’s Fittipaldi team. He was replaced by the charismatic James Hunt , who won the dramatic and controversial season of 1976 on the last modification of M23.

During the first tests of the new model M26 , before the 1977 season, the team faced some difficulties, so Hunt and Jochen Mass spoke at the M23 at the beginning of the season, and although the car was already 5 years old, it was still competitive. In the 1978 season, the M23 chassis was used, but without much success, by private teams.

The M23 was not the most technically advanced Formula One car, but constant modification and continuous development helped him win 16 Grand Prix, 2 pilot world championships and the Constructors' Championship in his history.

The M23 chassis has been modified for use in Formula 5000 racing.

That model M23 allowed McLaren to take a place in the elite of Formula 1 and served, in fact, the prototype of the constructive scheme of the modern Formula 1 car.
