It is encoded by genes on the 17th chromosome . Alternative splicing generates two transcripts producing different enzyme isoforms. The NOS2 enzyme has been known since 1992 , [1] and in 1995 , when its gene was described and the existence of three pseudogenes was discovered: NOS2P1 (NOS2A), NOS2P2 (NOS2B), NOS2P3 (NOS2C). [2] The enzyme synthesis is induced by a combination of lipopolysaccharide and certain cytokines .
