The list of countries by the number of millionaire cities shows the distribution of millionaire cities by country.
The first city to reach a population of 1 million people was Rome around the turn of our era [1] , but by the 5th – 6th centuries the population of Rome had significantly decreased. Alexandria was also close to the one millionth one a little earlier (from the 1st century BC) and later. In the middle of the first millennium, the Chinese Chang'an (now Xi'an) was the millionaire and the largest city in the world, and Baghdad at the end of the millennium. According to some estimates, the Chinese cities of Kaifeng and Hangzhou at the beginning of the second millennium may also have been millionaires. The first millionaire city in modern times was the Japanese city of Edo (now Tokyo ) in 1800 [2] . By 1850 there were 2 such cities, in 1985 there were 273 of them [3] .
