Etymology
The name of the dance is associated with a variation of the gray partridge - turaj, the movements of which are simulated during performance.
Origin of dance
The following legend exists about the origin of the dance: there was a dancer at the court of the Karabakh Khan Najafgulu Khan. Khan admired her beauty and skill. Once at the wedding of his son, she showed such a dance skill that he uttered in admiration that she was dancing like a partridge. [one]

There is such a legend about the Turaji dancing. Once upon a time, the khan of the Garabagh khanate has always been a very beautiful dancer. One day this dancer demonstrates very mastery miracles of dancing. The khan admiring the view says loudly: -You are dancing as turaj (partridge).
