A small and modest mansion was built by John Nash in 1825-1827 for the Duke of Clarence, who three years later ascended the throne under the name of William IV . Under Queen Victoria, her mother lived in Clarence House first, and then the younger sons.
Queen Elizabeth II and her husband occupied Clarence House before accession to the throne, preferring it to the old, but uncomfortable St. James's Palace. Now this tradition is continued by her son, Prince Charles , and from 1953 to 2002, Clarence House served as the London home of the Queen Mother, Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon .
