Historical background

Kavus is rarely mentioned in historical epics and chronicles (better known as the mythical character Shahnameh ). A significant part of the references to him is associated with his support of the Mazdakist movement.

Mazdakism is a religious and philosophical teaching that spread in Iran in the early Middle Ages. Initially, the Mazdakite movement was supported by the king of the Sasanian state, Kavad I, the father of Kavus, who sought to use it to weaken the position of the large aristocracy and Zoroastrian priesthood. However, in 499 , the nobles plotted and overthrew Kavad. Kavus was accused of sympathizing with the Mazdakite movement, all power was concentrated in his hands the youngest son of Kavad, Khosrov I Anushirvan , who was an ardent opponent of Mazdak. After returning to the throne in 501 , Kavad also began to gradually distance himself from the Mazdakites, and in 528 Mazdak and other leaders of the movement, as well as a large number of ordinary Mazdakites, were captured and buried alive in the ground upside down. The initiator of this reprisal was the youngest son of the Shah, Tsarevich Khosrov Anushirvan , who, with the tacit support of his father, executed his older brother Kavus, who continued to support Mazdakism.
