The flag of the German Democratic Republic is a horizontally elongated (3: 5) rectangular panel, consisting of three stripes of equal width: black at the top, red in the middle and gold at the bottom, with the emblem of the German Democratic Republic in the center. From the moment the GDR was formed in 1949 until 1959 , the flag of the GDR looked just like the flag of Germany . The coat of arms was developed in 1955 and was added to the flag of the GDR only in 1959 . As such, the flag was used as the national flag of the GDR until 1990.

The emblem depicts a hammer symbolizing the working class, a compass symbolizing the labor intelligentsia, and a wreath of wheat ears symbolizing the peasantry.
The demonstration of this flag was considered contrary to the constitution in the Federal Republic of Germany and in West Berlin , however, in 1969, the German government changed this policy.
From June to October 1990 , when the reunification of Germany took place, the modern flag of Germany was used as the national flag of the GDR.
Currently, the flag of the GDR is used by fans of some football clubs from eastern Germany, demonstrating it during matches at stadiums. Due to the fact that West German fans often react very negatively to this practice, the demonstration of the GDR flag is prohibited at some stadiums.
