The long reign of Maurizio Galbayo (only Francesco Foscari ruled Venice for longer) was a period of inner peace and tranquility. According to historians, Galbayo was a balanced and fair ruler and managed to keep Venice from participating in the turbulent European events of that time: the fall of the Lombard kingdom, the first military successes of Charlemagne, the growing political role of the Roman pope, the struggle of Byzantium for its colonies in Western Europe.
