History
In Tsarist Russia
The history of the temple has more than 450 years. The legal acts of 1524 mention the Borisoglebsk village, which later (1551) is also called Volokhov by the name of the landowner, to whom the surrounding lands were granted by Ivan the Terrible .
In the time of troubles in 1609, the monastery operating here was ravaged by Polish-Lithuanian invaders. Soon after, the wooden church of Boris and Gleb was built, which existed for about 200 years. In 1815, with the blessing of Bishop Vladimir and Suzdal Xenophon, on the initiative of landowner Baskakov A. A. and the material assistance of other parishioners, a brick church of the same name was erected on the site of a wooden church, which has survived to this day, although in a dilapidated condition.
The history of the temple is known for the work of N. S. S. Stromilov, historiographer of the land of Alexandrovskaya (1842–1895), whose family made a significant material contribution to the restoration and arrangement of the temple. Nikolai Semenovich Stromilov and his father were buried near the temple.
After the 1917 revolution
During the period of severe trials for the Russian Orthodox Church, the church was closed and gradually destroyed and looted. Everything was taken out of the temple: from tiles to icons and decorations. The Stromilovs' graves were also ravaged. Miraculously preserved on the altar wall of the temple painted with an image of Christ the Savior.
Current State
A few years ago, with the blessing of the archbishop of Vladimir and Suzdal, Eulogius initiated the restoration of the church with efforts: redecoration of the main altar was completed, the rafters and roof were replaced over the dome, new windows and doors were inserted, electricity was carried out. In 2003, ascetics of the local history club “Fatherland” (Alexandrov) restored the chapels on the Stromilovs' graves.
The temple, ranked among the historical and architectural monuments of Russia, needs help. Although much still needs major restoration, since 2006, regular church services have been held in the church. On September 30, 2006, there was a small coverage of the temple and the first Liturgy . The icon of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos was returned to the temple after a 60-year absence.
In February 2008, the rector of the church, Father Leonid was appointed, and the parish council was established.
In 2014, the icons of the Savior, the Blessed Virgin Mary “Grace of God” were painted in the central chapel, the board of trustees made and installed signs on the way to the temple, the cross was erected on the dome of the temple.
In 2015, with the active assistance of the Board of Trustees, all main icons were painted and installed in the central chapel, the Golgotha was made, and the walls of the central chapel were painted. icons hung earlier on the walls along the perimeter of the temple. As part of the needs of the parish, two books were printed: “The Prayer Book” and “The Liturgy with Explanations” for a fuller understanding of the church services by the laity. The fresco in the altar apse was restored and the figures of the Virgin and John the Baptist were added to it.
In 2015, the temple celebrated its 200th anniversary. On August 6, a celebration was held dedicated to the 1000th anniversary of Sts. blgvv. Princes Boris and Gleb. The hierarchal service, headed by Archbishop Aleksandrovsky and Yuryev-Polsky Evstafy, was accomplished. With the help of the board of trustees and the creators of the films “God Has It in the Garden”, a film about the temple and the prior has begun. Foma Magazine wrote an article about our temple by posting material on its website. Fully completed roofing work on the roof covering with iron, installed nets for birds. The iron gates were made and installed in the bell tower at the entrance to the church, the iconostasis was made and installed in the chapel of the holy Great Martyr Barbara.
