The initial version of the award was established on August 2, 1939, and its release was carried out in bronze (the original original name was “For the Construction of the Western Wall”). The design of the award was completed by Professor Richard Klein from Munich. The first version of the medal was awarded to military and civilians for the construction of the Siegfried Line defenses at its initial stage, from 1936 to 1940, as well as to the military personnel who patrolled it from June 15, 1938 to March 31, 1939. The first award took place in November 1939. The total number of people awarded was 622,064.
The second version of the award was established in October 1944, and its release was carried out in bronze zinc. It was awarded to military and civilians for the construction (reinforcement) of defensive structures (the second original name “For the construction of the defensive wall”) along the western borders of Germany, the so-called “ Siegfried Line ” (Western Wall or Western Wall), in anticipation of the landing of the Allied forces in Europe. Also, for all those who took part in the re-construction of the fortifications and had the original version of the award, a double reward fastener was issued with the date 1944, but it was not possible to introduce it into mass production in connection with the bombing of the territory of the Third Reich by Anglo-American aviation. The total number of recipients is about 800,000.
Description of the award: round medal, on the reverse side the German inscription “Für Arbeit zum Schutze Deutschlands” (“For the work to protect Germany”). In the construction of fortifications, forced workers and prisoners of war from the USSR accepted, but they did not receive any awards of the Third Reich [1] for their work.
