Athenas ( Spanish Club Atlético Atenas de San Carlos ) is a Uruguayan football club from the city of San Carlos , department of Maldonado . In 2019, he plays in the Second Division of the Uruguay Championship.

Content
History
The club was founded on May 1, 1928 . The word Atenas in Spanish means Athens . For most of its history, Atenas had an amateur status. The debut in the Second Division took place in 2002 . According to the results of the 2008/2009 season, the club took only third place in the Second Division, but the withdrawal from the championship in the Example of “ Villa Hispaniola ” freed up an additional place in the elite, which was given to “Atenas”. He made his debut in the elite on August 23, 2009 with a devastating defeat from an old-timer in the elite division of the Defensor Sporting , with a score of 1: 5 [1] . The team won their first victory only 2 months later, over Cerro Largo , 2-0 in the match of the 6th round of Aperture [2] . After spending only one season in the Example, the team returned to the Second Professional Division of the Uruguay Championship. In the 2014/15 season, “Atenas” once again performed in the elite, but again could not gain a foothold.
“Atenas” is one of the most successful clubs of the so-called Interior - the territory outside of Greater Montevideo . The club has 4 Interiors championship titles (1965, 1975, 1976, 2001) and many championships at the department level of Maldonado .
